Una utopía intelectual, o cómo conjurar la necrópolis

Abstract

El papel de la ciudad en América Latina ha preocupado no sólo a arquitectos y urbanistas, sino también a historiadores y escritores. La relación entre ciudad y sociedad o entre ciudad y cultura ha sido central en sus producciones. A partir de las consideraciones de Lewis Mumford sobre las megalópolis y sus problemas, el artículo se ocupa de las variantes estudiadas por José Luis Romero como un aspecto clave de la mentalidad burguesa y se detiene en autores que observan, diagnostican y problematizan la ciudad, como Olavo Bilac y Sebastián Salazar Bondy, quienes permiten un acercamiento de orden comparativo con otros autores latinoamericanos y practican géneros típicamente urbanos: la crónica periodística, que en ocasiones flexiona hacia el policial, y el ensayo de interpretación, que pretende erigir una identidad nacional a través de un retrato de la ciudad capital.

ABSTRACT: The role of the city in Latin America has worried not only architects and urbanists but historians and writers too. The link between city and society or between city and culture, has been central in their production. Starting from Lewis Mumford’s considerations about megalopolis and its growing problems, the article focus on citizen variants studied by José Luis Romero as key aspect from his work on bourgeois mentality and stops in those authors dedicated to observe, diagnose and problematize the city, as Olavo Bilac and Sebastián Salazar Bondy. Both of them allowed and approach to comparative order with other Latin American authors and practice genres which highlight as tipically urban: journalistic cronic, that at times tips to policial, and interpretation essay, that aims erect a national identity throught a portrait of capital city.
