El 68: Cuarenta años de imágenes. Fotografía y memoria

Abstract

Recientes investigaciones sobre el movimiento estudiantil de 1968 han abierto una nueva etapa en diversas áreas de la academia, como la historiografía. Esta disciplina está en un umbral desde donde procura acercarse de manera mucho más crítica al tema y analiza cómo se han ido modificando las preguntas sobre aquel suceso. Ya no sólo se discute “qué pasó” y “cómo pasó”, sino se cuestionan las formas en que ha sido representado. Este artículo se inserta en este nuevo horizonte historiográfico para saber cómo se conforma la “memoria visual” del movimiento estudiantil a partir de las fotografías aparecidas en la prensa mexicana en los cuarenta años posteriores. Se presenta una periodización que comprende, a través de la fotografía, tres etapas de la forma en que se rememora al movimiento estudiantil: el movimiento mismo, el silencio posterior y la explosión fotográfica.

Abstract: Recent research on the 1968 student movement has opened up a new stage in various areas of academia, such as historiography. This discipline is at a threshold where one seeks to approach an issue far more critically and to analyze how questions on that event have been modified. Analysts no longer only discuss “what happened” and “how it happened” but now question the ways it has been depicted. This article, which is part of this new historiographic horizon, seeks to determine how the “visual memory” of the student movement has been created on the basis of photographs published in the Mexican press over the next forty years. The article presents a periodization which, through photographs, identifies three stages in the way the student movement is remembered: the movement itself, the subsequent silence and the photographic explosion.
